Many children with disabilities in Libya cannot go to normal schools because the schools don’t have money or special teachers. Because of this, many children stay at home and feel very sad or lonely.

In 2020, a woman and her mother started a small family center to help them. The center is in a town near the capital city, Tripoli. Every day, more than 40 children and teenagers come there to learn how to read, write, and speak. Other private schools are very expensive, but this center helps poor families and costs very little money.

Parents are very happy with the results. One 6-year-old girl with Down syndrome couldn’t speak before and used to cry and scream. Now, she can talk clearly, tell her family how she feels, and she is much happier.

Difficult words: disability (when a person cannot do things which other people can easily do), private (controlled by one person or a small group, not by the government), scream (to cry out loudly).
